The Update Process
The Huntress Agent is silently updated by our team, eliminating the need for you to manage patches. This is managed by the HuntressUpdater service, which securely checks for and installs updates in the background without reboots or user interruptions.
Phased Rollouts
We update Agents in a phased rollout. You may see Agents with different versions for a period of time. Having multiple supported Agent versions at once will not affect Huntress detection capabilities.
Why Auto-Updates Fail
If an agent has not updated recently in the Huntress portal, you can investigate the following scenarios:
Scenario |
Possible Cause and Solution |
Agent appears offline or is temporarily disconnected |
Cause: The endpoint, such as a laptop or workstation, is powered off or disconnected from the internet. Solution: Power on the device and ensure it is connected to the internet. Check for power or internet outages. If the device has been isolated, remove it from isolation after other known issues are addressed. The Agent will check in and update shortly after it reconnects. |
Agent is permanently retired or device wiped |
Cause: The endpoint's hard drive was wiped or the device was replaced, but the Agent was not properly uninstalled. Solution: Log in to Huntress and clean up the unresponsive Agent(s) from your dashboard. There is no need to update a retired Agent. |
HuntressUpdater is being blocked |
Cause: It is possible that your antivirus software has quarantined the HuntressUpdater.exe file. Alternately, network connectivity issues may be preventing the HuntressUpdater service from reaching the Huntress portal. Solution: Ensure you have all allow list exceptions in place to prevent network disconnects, and to prevent antivirus from incorrectly blocking the service. |

Finding Outdated Agents
The Huntress Platform makes it quick and easy to find outdated Agents.
-
Log in to Huntress and go to your Account or Organization Command Center Dashboard or the EDR Dashboard.
- In the "Agents" status block, choose the Unresponsive text.
- This will sort your agents list to show any agent marked Unresponsive.
This view presents a list of all outdated Agents in one place. An Agent is marked as "outdated" when the version is no longer supported and is failing to update. If the Agent is checking in but not updating, reach out to Huntress Support for assistance.
